Digne makes emotional PSG return 11 years later and could face Aston Villa straight away
Lucas Digne has returned to where a major chapter of his football career began.
The French left-back has rejoined Paris Saint-Germain on a three-year contract, marking an emotional return to the club more than a decade after he first left Paris.
PSG confirmed the signing yesterday, welcoming back the 33-year-old France international, who grew up in the Paris region and previously spent two seasons with the club between 2013 and 2015.
For Digne, the move represents more than simply another transfer. It is a return to familiar surroundings, but also an opportunity to contribute the experience he has gained from more than a decade playing at the highest level of European football.
“I am very honoured to be returning to Paris Saint-Germain,” Digne said in a statement published by the club.
He also highlighted how impressed he has been by PSG’s development since his first spell at the club.
“I am particularly impressed by how the club has developed over the years,” he said, adding that he was eager to begin the next chapter of his career and contribute his experience to the team.
Digne’s career has taken him across some of Europe’s biggest football stages since he left PSG in 2015.
Following his time in Paris, he moved to Italy on loan with Roma before earning a transfer to Spanish powerhouse Barcelona. Interestingly, Barcelona were coached by Luis Enrique at the time, who is now the head coach of PSG.
Digne eventually made his way to the Premier League in 2018, joining Everton before moving to Aston Villa four years later.
His time at Villa became an important part of his career. At Villa Park, he helped the club achieve European success, winning the Europa League under manager Unai Emery last season.
His performances also continued to strengthen his position with the French national team. With 64 international caps to his name, Digne became France’s first-choice left-back during the 2026 World Cup.
Now, his next challenge comes in the colours of PSG.
Digne becomes the club’s second major signing of the summer transfer window after French international Maghnes Akliouche arrived from Monaco.
And football has wasted little time creating a potentially dramatic storyline.
Digne could make his PSG debut against his former club Aston Villa on Wednesday in the UEFA Super Cup in Salzburg.
If selected, the fixture could give him an immediate reunion with the players and club he represented only recently. It would be a remarkable way to begin his second chapter in Paris.
However, Digne’s long-term role at PSG is expected to be more measured. With Nuno Mendes established as the club’s starting left-back, Digne is likely to provide experienced competition and dependable cover.
