Nepal flood tragedy death toll rises to 623 as rescue teams continue desperate recovery
Nepal is facing a devastating aftermath as the death toll from severe floods and landslides has climbed to 623, with rescue and recovery teams continuing their difficult search for victims carried away by powerful rivers.
The disaster has left communities across Nepal struggling to cope with widespread destruction, missing loved ones and the heartbreaking task of recovering bodies from areas affected by surging floodwaters.
According to Nepal Police, 616 bodies have so far been recovered in the country. Chitwan and Nawalparasi East have emerged among the worst-affected areas, with 233 and 158 bodies recovered respectively.
The destruction has extended across several districts, including Gorkha, Dhading and Nuwakot, where overflowing rivers have caused extensive damage. Among the major waterways involved are the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers, which flow from the Himalayan region.
In a tragic indication of the force of the floodwaters, some bodies were recovered as far away as the border with India.
Authorities say at least 638 people remain missing on the Nepal side, including 511 foreigners, adding another layer of uncertainty and anguish for families desperately waiting for news.
The disaster has also affected neighboring China. According to state-run Xinhua News Agency, seven people have died and another 554 remain missing there.
Despite the scale of the tragedy, rescue operations continue. Nepali authorities report that 2,301 people have either been rescued or received treatment for injuries, with many survivors found in the Nuwakot and Rasuwa districts.
The emergency response has also placed enormous demands on law enforcement and rescue personnel. Police data indicates that 27 officers remain unaccounted for, while 4,811 personnel have been deployed across affected areas to support rescue, recovery and relief operations.
A tragedy measured in more than numbers
Behind every number is a family waiting for a phone call, a community searching for someone they love, and a survivor trying to understand what happened.
For families still waiting for missing relatives, the recovery operation is about far more than statistics. Every body recovered can bring a painful certainty, while every person found alive can bring a moment of hope amid extraordinary devastation.
Nepal now faces the enormous challenge of recovering from a disaster that has taken hundreds of lives, displaced communities and left many families without answers.
As rescue teams continue working through difficult conditions, the focus remains on finding those still missing, helping survivors and bringing some measure of closure to families affected by one of the region’s most devastating flood disasters.
