Cristiano Ronaldo confirms 2026 World Cup will be his final appearance
Cristiano Ronaldo has officially confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will mark the final chapter of his legendary international career, bringing an emotional perspective to one of football’s greatest journeys.
Speaking ahead of Portugal’s Round of 16 clash against Spain, the 41-year-old captain reflected on his legacy and future with honesty and calm determination.
“This will be my last World Cup, but let’s hope tomorrow isn’t my last game,” Ronaldo told reporters.
Despite acknowledging the end nearing, Ronaldo remains focused on performance and impact. He shared confidence in his current form, saying, “I don’t think I have had a bad World Cup. I have already scored three goals. Let’s see if I can score another tomorrow.”
So far in the tournament, Ronaldo has delivered once again on the global stage—scoring twice against Uzbekistan in the group phase and converting a crucial penalty against Croatia in the Round of 32, marking his first-ever World Cup knockout-stage goal.
His record continues to grow in football history. Since his World Cup debut in 2006 in Germany, Ronaldo has scored in six consecutive World Cups, becoming the first player ever to achieve that milestone. With 11 World Cup goals overall, he stands as one of the competition’s most consistent scorers across eras.
When questioned about retirement, Ronaldo made it clear that the decision rests solely with him.
“Whether I am playing or not, I will always have an important role with this national team. I will finish when I decide to finish, as I said years ago,” he stated.
He further added with emotional clarity, “To be honest, whatever happens tomorrow, I will leave with a clear conscience, not 100 per cent, but 1000 per cent. Because I’ve given everything in football.”
Ronaldo’s international legacy is unmatched. With 232 appearances and a record 146 goals for Portugal, he remains one of the most influential figures in international football history. He also led Portugal to their first major trophy at Euro 2016 and later lifted the UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.
Beyond statistics and trophies, Ronaldo also reflected on the human side of the tournament, highlighting the emotional connection between players and fans.
“This World Cup has been marked by the passion of the people… the passion of football fans everywhere,” he said.
He shared a touching moment, recalling meeting fans from Venezuela and Colombia at breakfast. “Many of them had tears in their eyes when they looked at me. That is what really matters. That is what life is about.”
As Ronaldo approaches what may be his final World Cup journey, the football world watches not just a player, but a legacy nearing its closing chapter.
Sometimes greatness isn’t only measured in goals or trophies—it’s also measured in the memories left behind, the emotions shared, and the millions inspired along the way.
