Unlucky gamble ends in major crackdown as Vietnam police uncover US$133 million World Cup betting network
Illegal online gambling continues to pose a serious challenge across many countries, and major international sporting events often become the biggest opportunity for underground betting syndicates. During the ongoing World Cup, Vietnamese authorities have launched one of their largest crackdowns yet, uncovering two massive illegal betting operations valued at approximately US$133 million (RM542 million).
Police in Ho Chi Minh City confirmed the arrest of 85 individuals connected to the two sophisticated gambling networks. Investigators described the organisations as exceptionally large, highly organised, and operating under a strict chain of command designed to avoid detection.
According to authorities, the illegal betting rings had been operating since October last year, processing an estimated US$133 million worth of gambling transactions through online platforms despite Vietnam’s strict ban on online gambling.
The investigation revealed that the organisers allegedly received high-level betting accounts from contacts based in Cambodia. These accounts were then divided into multiple agent and member accounts before being distributed to thousands of gamblers through online channels. This layered structure allowed the syndicates to expand rapidly while making their operations more difficult for law enforcement agencies to trace.
Vietnam has long maintained a firm stance against illegal gambling, but underground betting continues to thrive, particularly during globally watched sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup. The popularity of football creates enormous demand for betting, encouraging organised criminal networks to exploit digital platforms and cross-border connections.
The recent arrests are part of a wider nationwide campaign aimed at dismantling illegal gambling activities. Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security recently announced that, within the first 20 days of the World Cup alone, police had shut down 73 gambling operations across the country and arrested 346 suspects involved in football betting and other illegal gambling activities.
Authorities also disclosed that the total amount of money involved in these investigations reached thousands of billions of Vietnamese dong, highlighting the enormous scale of the underground gambling economy.
As the FIFA World Cup continues across Canada, Mexico, and the United States, with the championship match scheduled for July 19, law enforcement agencies remain on high alert to combat illegal betting activities that often surge alongside international sporting tournaments.
The latest crackdown sends a strong message that organised online gambling networks remain a priority target for Vietnamese authorities. While football brings excitement to millions of fans worldwide, officials continue urging the public to enjoy the tournament responsibly and avoid participating in illegal betting activities that can lead to severe legal and financial consequences.
