Ubisoft Announces Restructuring: UK Site Closure and Global Workforce Impact
France’s leading video game developer, Ubisoft, has confirmed plans to shut down its Leamington studio in the UK and restructure operations at three other locations—Ubisoft Düsseldorf, Ubisoft Stockholm, and Ubisoft Reflections. The decision will impact 185 employees, marking another significant move in the company’s ongoing global reorganization efforts.
This restructuring aligns with Ubisoft’s strategy to prioritize key projects and streamline costs in pursuit of long-term stability. The company has faced challenges recently, including delays and the underperformance of major titles. One notable disappointment was the tepid reception of Star Wars Outlaws following its launch in August last year, which failed to meet sales expectations.
In a LinkedIn statement, Ubisoft Leamington emphasized that the changes are part of a broader review of global operations to adapt to the increasingly competitive gaming market. “Our goal is to deliver the best experiences to players while ensuring sustainable growth,” the statement read.
Ongoing Global Restructuring
This latest announcement comes on the heels of other recent closures and workforce reductions. In December, Ubisoft shuttered its studios in San Francisco and Osaka while scaling back operations in Sydney. These moves collectively resulted in the loss of 143 jobs in San Francisco and potentially 134 more in Osaka and Sydney.
As part of its transformation strategy, Ubisoft has also enlisted advisors to explore opportunities for maximizing value for stakeholders. The company appears to be focusing on a leaner operational model while doubling down on key franchises.
Eyes on the Future
Despite its challenges, Ubisoft is gearing up for a major release: the next installment in its blockbuster Assassin’s Creed franchise. Titled Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the highly anticipated game is set to launch on March 20. The company hopes the new title will help reinvigorate its brand and capture the attention of its vast player base.
As the gaming industry continues to evolve, Ubisoft’s restructuring reflects its determination to navigate a highly competitive landscape while striving to remain a global leader in video game innovation.
