PM Modi Inaugurates Strategic Z-Morh Tunnel in Kashmir’s Ganderbal: A Milestone for Connectivity and Development
Sonamarg, January 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the highly anticipated Z-Morh Tunnel in the scenic Sonamarg area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district. This transformative infrastructure project, part of a strategic initiative to ensure year-round connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the Ladakh region, has been hailed as a significant step in boosting connectivity, tourism, and regional development.
The 6.5-kilometer-long tunnel, located near Gagengar along the Srinagar-Leh Highway, was officially dedicated to the nation during a high-profile ceremony. Accompanied by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and several Union Ministers, the Prime Minister inspected the state-of-the-art facility and interacted with the project’s engineers, workers, and authorities.
All-Weather Connectivity and Strategic Importance
The Z-Morh Tunnel is designed to provide all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg, a popular tourist destination in the Ganderbal district. Its construction includes a 5-kilometer approach road and incorporates a bi-directional tunnel with an emergency escape tunnel to ensure safety in any eventuality.
Developed by Apco Infratech Pvt. Ltd. at an estimated cost of ₹2,700 crore, this tunnel marks a significant step in improving accessibility to Ladakh and boosting tourism and trade. The project aligns with the government’s broader vision to enhance infrastructure in the region and strengthen socio-economic integration.
Economic and Tourism Boost
Speaking about the tunnel’s impact, experts believe it will significantly enhance the tourism potential of Sonamarg, often referred to as the “Meadow of Gold,” while ensuring uninterrupted access to the region throughout the year, even during harsh winters when heavy snowfall often blocks traditional routes.
Later today, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to address a public gathering in Sonamarg, where he is expected to highlight the government’s commitment to infrastructure development in Jammu & Kashmir and its transformative vision for the region.
The inauguration of the Z-Morh Tunnel represents not just a milestone in regional connectivity but also a symbol of hope and progress for the people of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
