Opposition Gears Up to Corner Govt as J&K Assembly Session Begins Tomorrow

As the autumn session of the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly kicks off tomorrow, all eyes are set on what promises to be a heated and eventful gathering. The opposition is fully prepared to challenge the ruling National Conference (NC)-led government on multiple fronts — from unfulfilled promises to governance concerns and the long-debated issue of statehood.

Leader of the Opposition, Sunil Sharma, voiced strong criticism, saying that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will demand clear accountability from the NC government. “The government has failed to deliver on its election commitments — be it 200 free electricity units, 12 LPG cylinders per household, or other major assurances. The people were promised change, but what they got instead was disappointment,” Sharma remarked, according to KNO.

He further pressed that the BJP will not back down on the issue of youth employment, a major concern in the Union Territory. “During the elections, the NC promised to create one lakh jobs for the youth. What has been done? We will ask for concrete answers,” he added.

Meanwhile, other regional opposition parties, including the PDP, Peoples Conference (PC), and Awami Ittehad Party (AIP), are expected to raise their voices on the restoration of statehood, reservation rationalisation, and other pressing issues affecting the region.

Adding to the tension, the Assembly Secretariat has disallowed a resolution from PC president Sajad Gani Lone, which called for restoring statehood to Jammu & Kashmir, citing the matter as sub judice.

During this session, the government is expected to introduce three key bills — amendments to the Jammu & Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act, 1989, and the Goods & Services Tax Act, 2017, along with the Jammu and Kashmir Shops and Business Establishment Bill, 2025.

According to official reports, the Legislative Assembly Secretariat has received 450 questions, 13 private members’ bills, and 55 private members’ resolutions for consideration. In addition, 33 private members’ bills pending from the previous session will be taken up on October 28, the day reserved for private members’ resolutions.

The Business Advisory Committee is scheduled to meet today at 3:00 PM in the Speaker’s office to decide on the time allocation for various discussions and legislative activities. The committee, working closely with the Speaker and the Leader of the House, will outline how much time each government bill and resolution will receive in this crucial session.

In a region where politics intertwines deeply with people’s aspirations, this assembly session isn’t just about legislation — it’s about trust, accountability, and the voice of the common Kashmiri. As debates unfold, citizens across Jammu & Kashmir will be watching closely, hoping that promises will finally translate into progress.
