Malaysia Makes History with First-Ever Men’s T20 Cricket Gold at SEA Games Thailand 2025

Malaysia’s men’s cricket team has etched its name into history by winning its first-ever gold medal in the men’s T20 event at the SEA Games Thailand 2025, a triumph that has ignited even bigger ambitions within the squad.

Vice-captain Virandeep Singh said the landmark victory has only strengthened the team’s hunger for success, with eyes now firmly set on capturing another gold in the upcoming men’s T10 competition.

Malaysia sealed the title in convincing fashion, finishing top of the single league-format tournament after a six-wicket win over Singapore in their final group match at Terdthai Cricket Ground. The team completed a flawless campaign, winning all four matches to collect a perfect eight points.

Despite battling a headache, Virandeep delivered a crucial performance, scoring 65 runs when it mattered most. Speaking after the match, he expressed pride in the achievement and gratitude for being part of a historic moment for Malaysian cricket.

He also highlighted how playing in overseas leagues in Nepal, Canada, and the Cayman Islands has helped him learn to manage pressure, control nerves, and stay composed in high-stakes situations. Virandeep believes such exposure is vital not just for individual growth, but for raising the overall standard of cricket in Malaysia.

According to him, these international experiences have deepened his understanding of the game across different conditions and cultures, and he hopes more Malaysian players will get similar opportunities on the global stage.

Team manager Vijayalingam Vythilingam praised the squad’s discipline and dedication, saying the gold medal was the result of consistent hard work and strong teamwork throughout the tournament.

Malaysia’s unbeaten run began with a dominant 114-run victory over the Philippines, followed by a seven-wicket win against Indonesia. The team then defeated hosts Thailand by eight wickets before sealing gold with the final win over Singapore.

The Philippines claimed silver after finishing second in the standings, while former champions Singapore took bronze. Prior to this historic win, Malaysia had settled for silver medals at the 2017 and 2023 SEA Games.

The SEA Games Thailand 2025 is being held from December 9 to 20 across venues in Bangkok and Chonburi.
