KL Rallies for Change: No Road Closures on July 26 But Police Presence Ramps Up
KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 — As the city prepares for the #TurunAnwar rally this coming Saturday, Kuala Lumpur police have confirmed that no roads will be closed — but extra measures are being taken to safeguard public order and ease movement throughout the capital.
Acting KL Police Chief, DCP Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad, assured the public that traffic will be managed carefully and that increased police presence will be felt at 15 key train stations around the city centre. The goal is clear: let the voices of the people be heard, while ensuring that daily life for other citizens continues without disruption.
The rally, organised by PAS Youth, is expected to draw a crowd of 10,000 to 15,000 people, who will converge at five major gathering points — Masjid Negara, Pasar Seni, Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Samad, Masjid Jamek Kampung Baru, and Sogo Mall — before moving to Dataran Merdeka, the historic heart of the nation’s civic expression.
To ensure both safety and order, extra police units and public transport personnel will be stationed at the following locations:
-
LRT Stations: KL Sentral, Pasar Seni, Masjid Jamek, Dang Wangi, Plaza Rakyat, Bandaraya, Sultan
-
MRT Stations: Muzium Negara, Merdeka, Bukit
-
Monorail Stations: Imbi, Raja Chulan, Bukit Nanas, Medan Tuanku, Chow Kit
While congestion is expected due to the large crowd, no road closures are planned, and police will be on duty to manage any traffic disruptions.
Mohamed Usuf reminded everyone involved to respect the law and exercise their rights peacefully. “We are not against your voice, but we want safety for all,” he said.
He emphasized that strict actions will be taken against any individuals or groups that threaten public safety, incite unrest, or provoke authorities. To that end, he offered a clear list of dos and don’ts:
Rally-Goers Are Advised To:
-
Avoid carrying sharp or dangerous items
-
Refrain from bringing fireworks, flares, or firecrackers
-
Do not display placards with race, religion, or royalty-related content
-
Avoid spreading false information or hate speech
-
Leave young children at home for their safety
-
Cooperate with law enforcement and follow all given instructions
Anyone with questions or safety concerns can reach out to the Kuala Lumpur police hotline at 03-2115 9999 or contact the nearest police station.
As Malaysia continues to grow as a democratic nation, the rally this weekend stands as a reminder of the power of peaceful expression. But with that right comes the responsibility to protect each other — to march with purpose, but not provoke; to stand firm, but stay kind.
