Flood Declared in Jhelum: Kashmir on High Alert After River Crosses Danger Mark

SRINAGAR, August 27, 2025 — A wave of concern has gripped communities across South Kashmir as authorities officially declared a flood in River Jhelum early Wednesday morning, after the water level surged past the danger mark at Sangam in Anantnag district. The relentless rainfall over the past several days has left the region on edge, with emergency teams now on high alert.

At 2:30 AM, the Flood Control Division of Anantnag confirmed that the river had exceeded the flood declaration level of 21.66 feet. “Due to the ongoing spell of heavy rainfall since the night of August 25, and with increasing inflow from tributaries, the water level at Sangam has crossed critical levels,” read the official statement. This announcement wasn’t just a technical alert—it was a message to the people of Kashmir to be prepared, be safe, and stay vigilant.

In Srinagar, the situation is equally tense. The Jhelum at Ram Munshi Bagh has breached the alert level, prompting additional monitoring. Emergency teams have been dispatched to assess and respond in real-time. Authorities assure that contingency plans are already in motion to protect lives and property.

The Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir has urged residents, especially those living near low-lying areas and along riverbanks, not to venture close to the water bodies. “The safety of every individual is paramount. We appeal to everyone to remain indoors, stay informed through official channels, and cooperate with emergency services,” the Commissioner advised.

For any emergency assistance, residents can dial 112 or 6005953255.

This is not just a weather update. It’s a call for solidarity and community awareness. As waters rise, so must our collective responsibility to care for our neighbors, stay alert, and act sensibly. The coming hours are crucial.
