China Reaffirms Its Stance on Taiwan Amid Trump’s Comments: A Push for ‘Peaceful Reunification’
In a firm yet familiar tone, Beijing has once again reiterated its unwavering position on Taiwan, stressing that it remains committed to peaceful “reunification,” but drawing a clear line: any attempt at separation will not be tolerated.
This response from China came shortly after former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed during a Fox News interview that Chinese President Xi Jinping had assured him, via a phone call, that there would be no invasion of Taiwan while Trump was in office.
“We are willing to work with the greatest sincerity and utmost effort to strive for peaceful reunification,” said Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, during a press briefing on Monday. However, Mao was equally assertive in adding, “China will not allow anyone or any force to separate Taiwan from China in any way.”
The message from Beijing, while consistent with its long-standing policy on Taiwan, reflects a growing sensitivity to how international commentary—especially from prominent Western leaders—can shape the conversation around cross-strait relations.
In the backdrop of an increasingly complex U.S.-China dynamic, these remarks serve as a reminder that Taiwan remains a deeply emotional and political issue for Beijing, and any perceived deviation from the “One China” principle, even in words, is likely to be met with swift rebuttal.
