MAG Leadership Faces Aviation Storm with Confidence and Strategy
Malaysian Aviation Group (MAG) is stepping into a challenging chapter—but not without determination. Newly appointed Group President and CEO, Captain Nasaruddin A. Bakar, believes the airline has what it takes to weather the storm currently shaking the global aviation industry.
Having officially taken the helm on February 1, Nasaruddin is no stranger to turbulence—both literal and professional. With over three decades of experience in the company, he understands the unpredictable nature of aviation and the pressures that come with leading during uncertain times.
He openly acknowledged the reality of the situation. The challenges are real, the pressure is intense, and the stakes are high. But instead of avoiding the truth, he leaned into it.
According to him, the aviation sector is going through a difficult phase, and airline leaders across the world are actively trying to find solutions. It’s not easy—but it’s not impossible either.
What gives him confidence is the strength of his team. Nasaruddin emphasized that MAG is backed by a capable and resilient management group, one that is ready to adapt, respond, and move forward strategically. He believes that with the right people in place, the organisation can not only survive the crisis but also uncover opportunities within it.
Rather than sticking to rigid targets, MAG is choosing a more flexible approach—adapting to market demand as it evolves. Travel demand from countries like China and India continues to show strong momentum, and the group is preparing to expand its network with new routes while keeping profitability at the center of its decisions.
At the same time, rising fuel prices remain a major concern. The volatility in fuel costs has made planning more complex, with sudden price increases impacting overall operations. Despite this, MAG is working hard to optimise revenue, maintain competitive pricing, and manage costs as efficiently as possible.
Geopolitical tensions have also forced operational adjustments. Flights to certain Middle Eastern destinations were temporarily suspended due to safety concerns, with ongoing evaluations being conducted daily. The airline has had to reroute and rethink cargo operations, exploring alternative hubs to maintain connectivity.
Through all of this, one priority remains unchanged—safety. Nasaruddin made it clear that every decision, whether operational or strategic, revolves around ensuring the safety of passengers, crew, and assets.
