Former Polish Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro Confirms Asylum in Hungary Amid Claims of Political Repression

Former Polish Minister of Justice Zbigniew Ziobro has confirmed that he has been granted asylum by the Hungarian government, citing what he describes as political repression in Poland.

In a statement shared on Monday via the social media platform X, Ziobro said he made the decision to accept Hungary’s offer of asylum after careful consideration of his situation. According to him, the move was necessary to protect himself from actions he believes are politically motivated and directed against him in his home country.

“I decided to take advantage of the asylum granted to me by the Hungarian government due to political repressions in Poland,” Ziobro wrote, signaling a significant escalation in tensions surrounding his legal and political standing.

Ziobro, a prominent and controversial figure in Polish politics, previously served as justice minister and prosecutor general. His tenure was marked by deep divisions within Poland and ongoing disputes with European institutions over judicial reforms and the rule of law. His decision to seek asylum abroad has already sparked strong reactions across the Polish political spectrum and beyond.

The Hungarian government has not yet released detailed public comments explaining the legal or political basis for granting asylum, but Hungary’s leadership has often positioned itself as a critic of what it calls politically driven actions within the European Union.
