Fury in Kashmir Over ‘Obscene’ Fashion Show in Gulmarg During Ramazan

Srinagar: A massive controversy has erupted in Kashmir after a fashion show, deemed “obscene” by many, was held at the renowned ski-resort of Gulmarg during the sacred month of Ramazan. The event, featuring provocative outfits and performances, has ignited outrage among religious leaders and the local community, with many condemning it as an attack on Kashmir’s cultural and religious values.

Among the most vocal critics is Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the head priest of Kashmir and chairman of the Hurriyat Conference, who expressed his strong disapproval. Taking to social media platform X, he wrote:

“Outrageous! That in the holy month of Ramadan, an obscene fashion show is organized in #Gulmarg, with pictures and videos going viral, sparking shock and anger among people. How could it be tolerated in a valley known for its Sufi, saint culture, and the deeply religious outlook of its people? Those involved should be immediately held accountable. Such obscenity in the name of tourism promotion will not be tolerated in #Kashmir!”

The fashion show quickly became the center of controversy as videos and images flooded social media, sparking widespread anger and calls for accountability. Many locals believe the event was a blatant disregard for Kashmir’s deep-rooted religious and cultural traditions, especially during the holy month.

Responding to the outrage, the Chief Minister’s Office acknowledged the concerns and assured action. In a post on X, the office stated:

“The shock & anger are totally understandable. The images I have seen show a complete disregard for local sensitivities & that too during this holy month. My office has been in touch with the local authorities & I’ve asked for a report to be submitted within the next 24 hours. Further action, as appropriate, will follow from this report.”

Kashmir, known for its breathtaking landscapes and a strong cultural identity shaped by centuries of Sufi influence, has long walked a fine line between tourism promotion and preserving its heritage. The recent incident has reignited the debate over where the boundaries should be drawn, with many demanding stricter oversight on events that may challenge the region’s traditions.
